I went to South Africa to cheer for Delh
Mumbai, April 25 (IANS) Akshay Kumar, who vowed not to be a part of any Indian Premier League (IPL) game in South Africa, was recently seen at a match with friend Preity Zinta. The actor says he went to Cape Town just to cheer for the Delhi Daredevils. Akshay was seen at the IPL match between Delhi Daredevils and Preity Zinta-owned Kings XI Punjab last Sunday. Earlier, he had refused to be a part of the match even though pals Preity Zinta and Shilpa Shetty own two teams in the IPL. 'I had no intentions of going. But the Delhi Daredevils did it. Although this year I'm no longer professionally or financially associated with the team I had to go for their sake to the IPL match on Sunday. There I met up with my buddy Preity Zinta and naturally the cameras went berserk. So what if her team was playing against the Delhi Daredevils? Off the field we're still the best of friends. But that's it. I won't be attending any of the other matches,' Akshay said.

Reliance Big Entertainment signs Julia R
Mumbai, Feb 6 (IANS) After collaborating with seven Hollywood giants, Reliance Big Entertainment, the media and entertainment arm of the Anil Ambani group, has now signed two more deals with actress Julia Roberts and director Brett Ratner. Big Entertainment has collaborated with Roberts' Red Om Films and Ratner's Rat Entertainment for creative partnership, the company said in a statement. 'Our innovative foray into Hollywood has proven very productive on the development front and we are now looking forward to moving into the filmmaking stage over the coming months,' said Amit Khanna, chairman of Reliance Big Entertainment, in the statement. 'We were immediately impressed by both Julia's and Brett's enthusiasm for our creative partnership plan,' he added. The two deals takes Big Entertainment's partnership deals with the leading production houses in Hollywood to nine. Earlier, at the Cannes Film Festival 2008, it announced deals with Nicolas Cage's Saturn Productions, Jim Carrey's JC 23 Entertainment, George Clooney's Smokehouse Productions, Chris Columbus' 1492 Pictures, Tom Hanks' Playtone Productions, Brad Pitt's Plan B Entertainment and Jay Roach's Everyman Pictures. All nine deals provide for the creation of a development silo for each of the production entities and the possibility of Reliance co-financing projects that emanate from these development deals. According to the statement, filmmakers of any greenlit project - films that are financed - which Reliance co-finances will be given creative and financial freedom. Eight of the partnerships have had development projects approved, while over 20 projects are in its handpicked slate. The Ambani company anticipates most projects to generate content this year. 'These creative partnerships will lead to Reliance co-financing with the majority of the major US studios as we are totally respectful of the existing first-look deals that each of our partners enjoys,' said Reliance Big Entertainment president Rajesh Sawhney. 'From the conversations to date, we know that the respective studios will welcome our development silos and our subsequent co-financing ability,' he added. The statement said Reliance Big Picture, a division of Reliance Big Entertainment that will focus on media investments outside of India, sees the development deals as the first major building block in the creation of a virtual studio, or new-generation media company.

Lacking healthcare, a million Indians di
London, Feb 2 (IANS) One million Indians, mostly women and children, die every year because of inadequate healthcare in a country full of highly-skilled doctors, Britain's Oxford University said Monday. The prestigious university is to discuss the health and environmental challenges at the fourth Oxford India Business Forum to be held in New Delhi next month, it said. The Oxford Saïd Business School said the forum will discuss 'Health and the Environment: Challenges to India's Growth' on March 25. The school said over a million people, predominantly women and children, die each year in India due to lack of adequate healthcare. Some 700 million people have no access to specialist care, as 80 percent of the specialists live in urban areas. 'India covers 2.4 percent of the Earth's surface. The country faces the daunting challenge of supporting 16 percent of the world's population. The result is a severely unsustainable degradation of natural resources. Quality health-care remains inaccessible throughout the country, despite the presence of a highly skilled and qualified medical workforce,' it said. 'Unless these issues of limited natural resources, the rapidly growing population, basic healthcare and air and water pollution can be addressed, simply pursuing the objective of growing the economy seems short-sighted,' it added. The panel will be addressed by globally renowned health and environment experts.

Islamic clerics mull smoking ban in Indo
PADANG PANJANG, Indonesia (AP) Indonesian clerics debated Saturday whether Muslims an overwhelming majority in the country should be banned from smoking. If the Ulema Council, Indonesia's top Islamic body, issues a ruling on the issue, it could shape government policy in one of the world's largest tobacco markets. The country of 235 million is secular but 90 percent of the population is Muslim. Gusrizal Gazahar, an Ulema Council member, said more than 700 clerics and theological experts gathered for the weekend talks in Padang Panjang, a village in West Sumatra province. They will make a decision on the issue on Sunday. Other hot issues on the agenda included possible restrictions on practicing yoga considered unlikely and bans on underage marriage and even voting. The smoking debate was triggered by concerns over health, Gazahar said, but some clerics on the main island of Java, where the tobacco industry plays a key role in the economy, do not want a fatwa to be passed. Both sides of the issue would be carefully weighed, he added. At a dollar a pack, even the poorest of the poor can scrape up enough money to smoke in Indonesia. Two-thirds of the country's young adult males light up, the Indonesian cigarette producers' association says, joined by a growing number of women. Indonesia has more Muslims than any other country in the world, some 210 million. Most practice a moderate form of the faith, but a vocal extremist fringe has succeeded in recent years in influencing the government, which relies on the support of Islamic parties.

Women smell of onion while males of chee
London, Jan 29 (ANI): Women smell of onions while men are more likely to whiff of cheese, says scientists after "sniffing" both sexes' armpits. The bizarre research, which investigated the distinctive armpit odours of men and women, was conducted by scientists at Firmenich, a company in Geneva that researches flavours and smells for the food and perfume industry. To reach the conclusion, researchers took samples of armpit sweat from 24 men and 25 women after they had spent time in a sauna or 15 minutes on an exercise bike, reports the Telegraph. After the analyses, team found those from women contained high amounts of an odourless sulphur-containing compound, according to New Scientist magazine. When this mixed with bacteria usually found under the arm, it was transformed into a chemical called thiol, well known for its onion-like smell. In men, scientists found high levels of an odourless fatty acid which released a cheesy smell when exposed to enzymes produced by bacteria in the armpits. Christian Starkenmann, who led the study, said: "Men smell of cheese, and women of grapefruit or onion." A team of independent testers recruited by the scientists also found the smell from women's armpits was more unpleasant. Professor Tim Jacob, who researches the science of smell at Cardiff University, said: "Other factors include what you eat, what you wash with, what you wear and what genes you inherit." (ANI)

Hamas responsible for suffering of Pales
Ramallah, Jan 6 (DPA) French President Nicolas Sarkozy has called for an urgent truce between Israel and militants in the Gaza Strip, and blamed Hamas for the violence which has seen 550 Palestinians killed and over 2600 wounded in 10 days of Israeli attacks. Addressing a joint news conference in Ramallah with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and a European Union delegation Monday night, he condemned the firing of rockets into Israel, stressing that Hamas 'acted in an irresponsible and unforgivable way' when it ended a truce on Dec 19 and began launching missiles at the Jewish state. 'Hamas bears a big responsibility for the suffering of the people in Gaza,' he said.

Netaji died in Taihoku air crash: Italia
Kolkata, Jan 23, (ANI): Italian Ambassador in India, Alessandro Quaroni said on Firday that Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose died in 1945, in an air crash at Taihoku and therefore there is no point in undertaking further research. Addressing the media at Subhash Chandra Bose's ancestral house on his 113th anniversary, Quaroni said, "I personally do not see the point of research because unfortunately, the person, Netaji died, but his message lived on and still remains." When asked about whether he had document indicating Netaji's death in the Taihoku crash, he replied, "But I don't know if there is any Japanese report. After all, there is a possibility of a plane crash. At that time, Taiwan, where the crash occurred, was under Japanese dominion. So, if there is any written proof or record of the circumstances, that should be in the Japanese records." Quaroni's parents were very good friends of Bose. His father Pietro Quaroni, who was then the Italian Ambassador to Afghanistan, gave a false passport to Netaji in the name of Orlando Mazzotta in Kabul. The government has already appointed three-enquiry commissions- the Shah Nawaz Commission, the Khosla Commission and the Justice Manoj Kumar Mukherjee Commission, to look into the matter. The Shah Nawaz and The Khosla Commissions agreed that Netaji was killed in the Taihoku air crash, while the Mukherjee commission concluded that Netaji was alive when the crash took place. (ANI)

Raaz - The Mystery Continues... MOVIE
The Bhatts live up to their promise and deliver an interesting film in 'Raaz-The Mystery Continues.' Director Mohit Suri, who is credited with the story of the film, along with Shagufta Rafique, comes up with a film that works. Hindi films have never really scored high on the horror quotient, but this film, without really breaking any new ground, has its moments which have been well crafted. The premise is supported by some very credible acting by the film's protagonists, Kangana Ranaut, Emraan Hashmi and Adhyayan Suman. Another plus for the film is its music, which is lilting and has some very good numbers, which have been picturised quite effectively. Just like human beings love to cry and laugh in the theatres, they also love being spooked. Ram Gopal Verma knows this well and he made a killing with films like Bhoot and Phoonk. Taking a leaf out of that same book, Vishesh Films have come up with a film which has many such uncanny moments. The best thing about the movie is that it has an interesting story and it has been played out well in the screenplay. However, where Suri stumbles is really towards the end. He is unable to wrap the film up satisfactorily. But where he has excelled in, is the manner in which he has laid out premise of the film. He builds the atmosphere very skillfully as the protagonist encounters the unnatural in incident after incident. The film engages you from the beginning itself and draws you into the plausibility of there being 'something out there', which is not all benign. The film's story is about an artist Prithvi (Emraan Hashmi), who is plagued by some very disturbing visions. He sees a woman, who we later know as Nandita (Kangana), a woman he has never met before, and sees her in all kinds of disturbing situations. He does not stop at just painting these visions on his canvas but goes ahead and tracks her down, propelled by a feeling that the visions are nothing but signs of what lies in store for her. He feels impelled to warn her about these accidents, which are going to happen to her. Nandita does not believe him in the beginning, but gradually the truth of what he was saying starts dawning on her. Strange, scary things happen to her, which are uncannily, exactly like what Prithvi has already painted on his canvas. To top it, his latest painting shows her as dead. Nandita's boyfriend, Yash, does not believe in the supernatural and dismisses Prithvi's visions. Nandita is faced with a dilemma as she has the option of allowing the uncanny and scary incidents to continue or fight for her life, with Prithvi's help. The director has done a good job with the movie and it will probably rank as one of Mohit Suri 's better films. Except for the end, one would say that he has directed the movie with a lot of confidence. The camerawork of the film by Ravi Walia is good and so is the editing. The film moves at a very good pace and the scary quotient has been well done, with going over the top. Where the actors are concerned, Kanagana Ranaut scores yet again. Her fragile beauty works very well for the character as does her histrionic ability. She is quite the scene stealer here, as she was in her last film, Madhur Bhandarkar's Fashion. She is well supported by Emraan Hashmi, who shows that he is quite adept in the art of acting as well. The film actually belongs to the two of them and they both play true to their roles. As for Adhyayan Suman, he makes his presence felt as Nandita's boyfriend, Yash. These are early days, but the actor shows promise. Jackie Shroff makes one of his rare appearances in a bit role, which is a letdown.
